Attending a wedding can be a costly affair for your guests with new outfits, travel and accommodation costs and, even though you’ll be lavishing them all with a day of beautiful food and drink, it’s nice to treat them to let them know you appreciate them being there to share in your celebrations.
Adding little touches like this to your wedding day needn’t cost the earth or require extra work on your part and something that will be remembered and will make your guests feel loved.
1. Little Welcome Packs
If you have guests who have travelled from afar and are staying at your venue or at a nearby hotel, then leaving them a little welcome pack to say thanks for coming so far is a really lovely idea. Ask a family member or friend to deliver the gifts or leave them at the hotel where reception will happily have them delivered to your guests’ rooms. It can be something as simple as a couple of prettily wrapped cookies to have with a cuppa on their arrival (or a late night snack) to a more elaborate basket of goodies including a little tipple and some sweet and savoury treats. Whatever the gift, add a little personal thank you note and maybe details of timings for your big day and a local map or details of coffee shops or attractions nearby if they are staying a while.
2. Treats for all ages
For those guests with little ones how about providing some sort of childcare or children’s entertainment? It doesn’t have to be anything too fancy and sometimes a play corner set up with cushions and toys or a fun play area set up on the lawn is all you’ll need, or go all out and have a children’s entertainer or on-site childcare for the day. Parents will love the chance to relax and have a break knowing their little ones are in good hands and having fun of their own.
If you have teenagers coming along, hire outdoor games (Ufton Court have a table tennis to hire which is great fun for teenagers) or set up a gaming or chill out area for them too.
For the older family members, make a nice comfy seating area where they can relax and have a proper catchup with the relatives away from the noise of the music (see our upcoming feature on how to style the Archers Hall at Ufton).
3. Little Essentials
You never know what the conditions are going to be like at your venue so cover all the bases for your guests by having a few essentials to cope with anything mother nature throws at them.
A basket of suncream sachets, bug spray wipes, or even heel protectors if the lawns are a bit squidgy will all be a welcome extra thought and, if it’s a hot day, think about having a basket of pretty paper fans or even those little battery operated handheld fans to help your guests get through the ceremony.
4. Blankets, Brollies and Flipflops
Even in summer, you can’t always bank on the weather. In the late evenings it can get a bit cool and your guests will love wrapping themselves in a snuggly blanket whilst they take in the evening air. Hiring baskets of blankets will save you loads over buying them and will make your guests feel like you’ve thought of everything.
You also never know when the heavens may open up so a basket or two of brollies is always a thoughtful addition. Hire clear brollies so if they’re needed for the bridal party to get from A to B they won’t get in the way of photos, or for an outdoor ceremony so that everyone will still be able to see. Again, look at hiring to save yourself some money.
For tired dancing feet, have a basket of flipflops for that time of the evening where guests need to ditch their shoes. These have been a wedding favourite for a long time and guests still love them. Anytime we provide a basket of flipflops for our couples, there are never any left over! Flipflops are available online or save yourself even more money by getting them through a supplier like us and hire the basket with a bespoke sign thrown in.
5. Favours Doing Double-Duty
Everyone still loves a wedding favour and you can’t go wrong with foodie type favours. Whilst there are loads of cool practical favours out there, it’s often difficult to find something that will suit every guest and you don’t want the heartache of seeing a pile of leftover favours, which you’ve put your hard-earned money and thought into, left at the venue at the end of the night. Sweet treats or little foodie favours can be really budget-friendly and are easy for your guests to take home.
Make your favours do double duty and include a name tag so they become a place setting too which saves the cost of printing separate ones. This option allows you to tailor your favours to your guests so you can cater for any special dietary requirements so no one misses out.
Another thoughtful touch is to celebrate any guests’ birthdays or special events that coincide with your wedding day so they don’t feel left out – a little card or extra special favour is a lovely touch. Parents of little ones will also appreciate a little something that will keep little hands and minds busy like a toy or an activity pack in place of a favour.
I’ll be at the Ufton Court Wedding Fayre on 19th May 2019 so come and say hi and, if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with your wedding plans, or have any décor dilemmas, make sure you book in for our free Ask The Stylist sessions being held all day where you can get help and advice on anything to do with your wedding, no matter where your venue is or whether you’re DIY’ing or using suppliers on your wedding day. Bookings can be made via my instagram, email, text or give me a call. Alongside me will be the fabulous personal stylist, Jo, from Sparkling Ginger who will also be offering free advice and tips on styles and shapes that suit you, your bridesmaids or any of your bridal party or guests who are having problems choosing an outfit.
